For low power consumption it is essential that the output from the laser diode (LD) is efficiently coupled to the optical waveguide, and there are several approaches reported in the literature, such as an evanescent coupling and butt-joint coupling, with and without spot-size converters (SSC).

Photodetectors (PDs) are also key components for on-chip integration technologies, and both compound material systems and germanium (Ge) have been successfully employed as detector materials.
